Sale Description:
African Antiques & Art - The Estate of Suelle Nachif
Suelle Nachif was a Man of Gambian and Lebanese Heritage, Whose Life Blended Artistry, Craftsmanship and Cultural Curiosity
The Estate of Suelle Nachif
Suelle Nachif was a man of Gambian and Lebanese heritage whose life blended artistry, craftsmanship and cultural curiosity. He trained as a hairdresser with Vidal Sassoon, one of the most influential figures in modern hairstyling, and went on to build an international career that took him to New York, Paris and London. For ten years he served as Artistic Director for Elizabeth Arden in New York, a role that reflected both his technical mastery and his creative vision.
After returning to The Gambia, Suelle became a well known and much loved figure in the community. His vintage style salon attracted both Gambian women and expatriates, and he was admired not only for his skill but for his warmth, storytelling and the sense of ease he brought to those around him. His salon became a place of conversation, creativity and connection.
Suelle was an avid collector of West African items. His collection ranges from jewellery, tribal masks, carvings, bronzes, figures, art and one or two none African pieces to include early telephones and a British policeman’s whistle.
Suelle was also an exceptional artist, producing expressive works that reveal his distinctive eye for colour, form and emotion. Many of his paintings and creative pieces are included in this auction, offering a rare opportunity to appreciate and acquire examples of his personal artistic legacy.
The pieces presented in this sale stand as a testament to a life lived with style, generosity and artistic spirit — and to a man whose creativity touched many people across continents.
The proceeds of this sale will go towards continuing his life long projects.
