In Saturdays sale, the star lot was an oil on canvas entitled ‘Ploughing on the Downs’ by James Bateman RA (1893 - 1959). The canvas measured 69cm x 95cm. This was one of around 300 lots offered for sale to buyers via online bidding, room bidding and telephone bidding. We also had commission bids left and bidding was quick to start with the hammer finally going down at £30,000 plus fees to a telephone bidder.

The vendor supplied us with an envelope containing the original receipt supplied to the buyer from the artist James Bateman dated 1944 along with other items of interesting provenance which will be given to the successful buyer. We also have Phillips probate valuation of £9,000 dated July 2000.
